Properties with Purpose

Happy Mother's Day! Let's take a moment to honor all the amazing mothers and mother figures in our lives. The tireless love, nurturing, and sacrifice of mothers helps shape our world in beautiful ways.

Whether it's the mother who raised you, a grandmother, aunt, friend, or mentor - Mother's Day is a special time to express our gratitude. Let the important women in your life know how much they mean to you. A simple heartfelt gesture like a handwritten note, their favorite flowers, or quality time together can go a long way in making her day brighter.

Mothers Day Poem: A Mothers Embrace

Her love, a beacon in the night, Guiding us through darkness to light. Selfless, strong, with endless grace, A smile that warms her family's place. Teacher, nurturer, friend for life, Calming our fears, easing strife. Tireless hands that work and toil, Planting seeds in fertile soil.

Mental Health Matters

The Invisible Struggle: Homeless Mothers and Children

As we recognize Mental Health Awareness Month, we must bring attention to one of the most vulnerable populations affected by mental illness - homeless mothers and their children. The statistics are staggering: Over 92,000 homeless mothers lived in shelters with their children in 2020

51% of single homeless mothers live with mental health issues like depression, PTSD, and anxiety disorders.  Children of homeless mothers are 2-3 times more likely to experience mental health problems themselve

The trauma of homelessness, lack of stability, and barriers to treatment create a perfect storm that impacts entire families for generations. Homeless mothers face impossible choices like skipping meals to pay for childcare or staying with an abusive partner to keep a roof overhead.

Breaking the Cycle Through Compassion

We cannot turn a blind eye as mothers and children live in constant crisis mode. Their mental health and human dignity depends on access to:

  • Affordable housing and shelters

  • Childcare assistance

  • Trauma-informed counseling and therapy

  • Job training and education opportunities

  • Community support groups

With the right resources and care, we can empower homeless mothers to get back on their feet and create a brighter future for their families. Every child deserves a safe, nurturing environment to thrive.

This Mental Health Month, let's come together to raise awareness and extend a hand to our homeless neighbors in need of hope. Their well-being and our community's future depends on it.

How Can Community Support Groups Be Structured To Best Help Homeless Families?

Skill-Building Components

  • Incorporate workshops on budgeting, job readiness, parenting, and other life skills.

Remove Barriers to Access

  • Provide free childcare, transportation assistance, meals, and consistent scheduling.

Resource Connections

  • Facilitate linkages to housing, healthcare, job training, legal aid and other tailored services.

By combining peer support, skill development, family inclusion, and resource access in a low-barrier setting, these groups can empower homeless families to rebuild self-sufficiently.

Help Inn Folk primarily serves single adults experiencing homelessness. However, when they receive referrals for families,  we ensure we connect those individuals to organisations that specialise in working with families. We actively promote services to other service providers in case any of their families' clients become single, and vice versa so they can facilitate appropriate referrals.

A mother's mental wellness is a gift to herself and her children. Take time for self-care, mamas - you deserve it.
